Vaccum Metallising

Vacuum metallising is a surface finishing process used to apply a thin metallic coating typically aluminium onto plastic components under controlled vacuum conditions. The process creates a uniform, reflective metallic layer while preserving the lightweight and dimensional stability of the base plastic. It is particularly suited for small to medium sized components where visual consistency and surface definition are critical.

Advanced Vacuum Metallising for High Quality Finishes

At KMP Engineers, vacuum metallising is integrated into the production flow to ensure precise coating placement and repeatable results. The metallic layer enhances surface appearance while also offering functional benefits such as improved wear resistance and reduced exposure to UV degradation. Metallising can be applied selectively based on component geometry, allowing decorative and functional areas to be finished without compromising the part structure.

The process supports a range of colour tones through controlled coating parameters and post metallising treatments, enabling finishes to be matched to approved design references. This makes vacuum metallising suitable for both aesthetic trims and functional components across applications where consistency and durability are required.

FAQ's

Vacuum metallising is a process where a thin layer of metal, usually aluminium, is deposited onto the surface of a plastic part inside a vacuum chamber. The vacuum removes air and moisture, allowing the metal to bond evenly to the surface. This gives the part a smooth, reflective, and durable metallic finish without adding much weight.
Most plastics can be vacuum metallised, including ABS, Polycarbonate, and PP. However, the part’s surface must be smooth and clean for the best results. In many cases, we apply a base coat before metallising to improve adhesion and appearance.
While vacuum metallising is mainly used for decorative purposes—giving parts a shiny, premium look—it can also add a layer of protection against wear, UV light, and corrosion.
The standard vacuum metallising finish is silver or chrome like, but we can achieve gold, rose gold, bronze, and other colours by using tinted topcoats or different base colours. This gives flexibility for both functional and aesthetic requirements.
When done properly and with the right topcoat, a vacuum metallised finish can last for years without fading or peeling. Durability depends on the part’s usage and environment, which is why we also offer protective PU coatings for high wear applications. This doesn't affect the part's structural strength in any way.
